Hello again and a warm welcome to the new subscribers. I see we have more international readers which is fun. Makes the world seem a little closer.

This month sees the G8 summit in Scotland and fingers crossed Mr. Blair will go against the sway of the American government and stand up for the environment. If you already recycle, use products with little packaging, walk instead of drive, and still feel at a loss, there is more you can do to help. This month's top feature is a company called Future Forests.

Future Forests

I first read about Future Forests in the paper about a year or so ago. The company is dedicated to planting native trees in long-term natural woodland. The website will calculate the carbon dioxide emission levels your energy consumption will cost the earth, based on how far you travel and lifestyle choices. Then you buy a tree to be planted in order to neutralise it.
I have to fly to see my family. So I buy trees each time I take a trip. But you don't have to travel across the globe in order to support them. My dearest doggy Gus recently went to meet his maker, and I bought a tree to be dedicated to him. Some day I will make the trip to Scotland to see the forest. And of course I will buy a tree to cover the cost to the planet.

As most of you know I am studying nutrition. Last night I was reading about dairy products. Most mammals lose the ability to break down lactose, the sugar in milk, just after weaning. In humans this happens between the age of 18 months and four years. Continuing to eat milk products can lead to a variety of illnesses, some showing quickly in allergies, colic, eczema and asthma in children, to more dangerous diseases such as arthritis, crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, MS and cancer later in life.
Most surprizing to me was the link found between dairy and arteriosclerosis, or furring of the arteries. Higher incidences of cardiovascular disease have been found in populations that consume large amounts of dairy products, with milk being the main culprit. It is the protein in milk that causes the problem, not the fat. There is an enzyme found in cow's milk, xanthine oxidase, that is believed to be one of the major causes of heart disease, according to a number of prominent orthodox cardiologists and alternative practitioners.

Apparently live yoghurt is the best dairy to eat if you have to because the bacteria found in it breaks down the protein and lactose in the milk, rendering it safer for consumption. However, if you are quite ill, or suffer any allergies at all, it would be better to eliminate it completely. Numerous studies show that people with arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and digestive disturbances have all improved dramatically after excluding dairy from thier diets.

I recently switched to soy yoghurt and I have to say I was pleasantly surprized by the taste. (I buy Alpro) I used to eat live yoghurt made from cow milk because it was good for the tummy. However I still became sluggish, bloated and sleepy after eating it. Having cut out the regular use of dairy, my digestion has taken an incredible turn for the better in addition to simply having more energy.

I will probably still eat the odd bit of cheese, especially feta, which I love. Used as a special food, I think my body will be able to handle it, unless otherwise instructed! The regular consumption of any food can lead to allergies. Dairy is one of the top problem foods for people and if you are on a healing path, cut it out for three weeks completely, even in tea and coffee. Dairy is added to strange things such as sausages so read your labels carefully. If you find your symptoms quickly improve, you ought to get off the udder for good.

Calendula is the simple marigold. This plant has almost miraculous healing powers in my opinion and I recommend you have it in various strengths. The tincture, or liquid herbal form, is excellent when applied to cuts and scrapes. Make sure to clean the area thoroughly first and then use ten drops to a small bit of water and dab it on with cotton. You can also use it on bug bites.
If you have been chronically ill for any reason, use Calendula 30C alongside other remedies to enhance healing. I used this remedy for a man with MRSA and after a month of daily use, he was retested and found free of the virus. Pretty powerful stuff. When you have an acute illness or operation, such as the 'flu or a tooth extraction, use Calendula 200C once a day for a week. Also use this remedy after childbirth if there has been any tearing.

Calendula is remarkable for ulcers and wounds that will not heal. Use internally in potency, and externally in tincture form. This remedy also helps with the pain and sensitivity of injuries.

Remember, if it is a chronic situation, use a lower potency such as a 30C for a longer period of time (up to three weeks). If in an acute or crisis situation, use the 200C daily for a short period (up to one week).

Until next time, stay well!
